St. Davids Lions are getting ready for their 50th annual carnival, opening Thursday at 5 p.m. on the St. Davids Lions Club property on York Rd.

It's changed a little during the last half a century, but the St. Davids Lions Carnival is still a local favourite.

With that many successful years of experience behind them, the Lions and Lioness are offering all the traditional features of the annual summer event: the popular games are back, Townsend Amusement Rides has brought amusement rides for all ages, and the food will be great, as usual, says St. Davids Lions member Bill Brower, one of the organizers.

New this year is more entertainment on stage each evening, and wine-tasting.

The carnival also features the traditional food favourites: back-bacon on a bun, hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, ice cream and other treats.

The United Church pie booth is back this year with all kinds of pies for everyone to enjoy.

And the amusement rides cater to both the younger and older crowd, including some of the new, bigger rides that the teens should love, ensuring that no one is left out of the fun.

Carnival-goers will be able to purchase raffle tickets which could send them home with some fantastic prizes - including the top prize of $10,000.

Second prize is a large-screen TV and home theatre, donated by the Petrie family and Niagara Trailers of St. Davids.

Third prize is a two-night stay at a Niagara Falls hotel donated by Niagara Clifton Group; fourth prize is a package from Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours, and the fifth prize is two tickets for the ride of your life by Niagara Helicopter.

Games include the fish pond, bingo and crown and anchor.

Funds raised at the carnival will go back to the community.

The carnival kicks off its festivities with free admission and parking, Thursday and Friday, July 25 and 26, 5 p.m until 11 p.m., Saturday July 27 from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday July 28 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. A free shuttle bus will operate from parking on York Rd. Saturday. The prize draw will be held Sunday at 6 p.m.
