A truck parked in a business driveway on Queenston Road near Niagara Stone Road was stolen Monday afternoon, while the business owner stood chatting nearby with the driver of the vehicle.
Dan Skeoch had stopped to talk with Bill German, the owner of a lumber mill on Queenston Road, and was standing about 25 feet from his truck when German, who was facing the driveway, asked him if he'd brought anyone with him.
Skeoch turned to see his truck starting to move, and he and German ran to it, German getting the passenger door open, but the driver floored it and left the driveway, "mud flying," said Skeoch.
A mile away, on Queenston near Airport Rd., the driver lost control and the truck struck an embankment, rolled in the air and came to a stop in the ditch on its wheels, said Skeoch.
The man who had taken the truck began to walk down Queenston Road but was apprehended by police and treated in an ambulance, Skeoch said.
Niagara Regional Police said their investigation revealed that a man had been drinking at a nearby bar, left the establishment on foot and walked to the driveway, saw the unoccupied vehicle and took it.
Brian Norman Hill has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, impaired operation of a motor vehicle and exceeding 80 milligrams blood alcohol content.
Hill was transported to 1 District cells where he was later released on a Promise to Appear in Court, the NRP report said.
