Martin Proulx’s $1-million winning Lotto Max Maxmillions ticket was a 50th birthday present from his mother.
The Welland man told Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.’s prize centre the ticket was tucked inside a card. When he went to check the ticket, he discovered the ticket for the Sept. 9 draw was a big winner.
“I scanned it in the ticket checker and saw all the zeros,” he told the prize centre. “I didn’t want to make a scene, so I drove home.”
He told his wife, who didn’t believe him until they both went and checked it again.
The store clerk laughed it off when Proulx told him he had the million-dollar ticket.
“That is when the terminal froze,” he said.
Proulx said he is making plans for his million-dollar win, including vacationing and buying cars for his wife and his parents.
He said, in an OLG news release, he leads a simple life and the win hasn’t “totally sunk in yet.”
