Halloween bash to raise funds for cancer research
Team Kelsey and Jace Wars have teamed up to host a Halloween bash.
Mashing the Monster, an adult Halloween costume party, has been planned for Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Fort Erie Golf Club at 8 p.m.
“The name Mashing the Monster is referred to as cancer, as in I want to mash it. That is why we are holding this event, we want to mash cancer,” said Lana Hill.
The proceeds from the dance will be donated to the McMaster University Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute.
Fort Erie’s Kelsey Hill, who lost a 15-month battle with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer, wanted to do something to help other children fighting the disease.
Together with her friends and family, Hill organized a number of events to raise money to help families with loved ones who have cancer. The committee of friends and family called themselves Team Kelsey.
Five years after her death, Team Kelsey continues to carry on in Kelsey’s memory, and has raised more than $120,000 to help families with children that have cancer.
Jace Russell, of Port Colborne, was only 14 months old when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. When Jace was well on the way to recovery, Jace’s father, Aaron Russell, created Jace Wars, a Star Wars-themed charity to raise awareness of childhood cancer and funds for research as a way to give back to the community.
“Jace had a brain tumour as well, and now he is better. Team Kelsey has decided to join forces with Jace Wars,” Hill said.
“This is the first time we are organizing the event and we wanted to try something new, something different for adults.”
There will be a DJ, pizza, and prizes for best dressed couple, scariest costume and funniest costume. A designated driver service will also be available.
