There will be plenty of opportunities to show the planet some love this weekend, during 47th annual Earth Day celebrations in the Garden City.

Celebrations start Friday with the Earth Day Expo at St. Catharines Market Square from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The third annual event features competitions, an eco-fashion show, photography, poetry and music, as well as workshops on recycling and composting, horticulture and gardening, energy conservation, water preservation and ecosystem stewardship.

Saturday, the city is asking people to pitch in to make St. Catharaines a more beautiful place.

Pitch-In Day events are being held at sites throughout the city from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., including the QEW off-ramp at Lake Street where participants from the age of 12 and up will first meet at the Best Western Plus parking lot at 2 North Service Rd. Cleanups are also taking place at Malcolmson Eco-Park, 325 Lakeshore Rd.; at the Pic Leeson Park’s main entrance off of Bloomfield Street, and at Participark Trail starting at the trail parking lot on Old Glendale Road, near Pelham Road and Glendale Avenue.

People can also help out by cleaning up their own neighbourhoods or other locations, with gloves and garbage bags available from the city.

People interested in getting a group involved can call 905-688-5600 to register and make arrangements to pick up the trash they collect.

An Earth Day celebration is planned for 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Centennial Park, 321 Oakdale Ave.

There will also be a native plant and tree sale at Malcolmson Eco-Park from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, featuring about 100 species of native trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses.

An Earth Day tree planting and dedication starts at 11 a.m., again at Malcolmson Eco-Park. Parking will be available at Grantham Lions Club at nearby 732 Niagara St.

More information about Earth Day activities is available on the city’s website, www.stcatharines.ca/EarthDay.
