Plenty to do in Port Colborne
Battle of Britain parade
A Battle of Britain parade, hosted by 434 and 484 Wings of the Royal Canadian Air Force Association, will be held Sunday, Sept. 17 in downtown Port Colborne.
It will start at 1:30 p.m. at Catherine and Park Streets, head south on Catherine Street and east on Charlotte Street. A brief ceremony
will be held in front of city hall, 66 Charlotte St. There will also be a display the lobby of city hall from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.
The annual commemoration of the Battle of Britain honours the airmen who fought and died during the battle and recognizes those who continue to serve in the Royal Canadian Air Force today. More than one hundred Canadians flew in the Battle of Britain between July and October 1940 and 23 lost their lives; an unknown number also served as ground crew.
Historians have described the battle, which involved almost 3,000 Allied airmen, as a turning point of the Second World War. It was the first battle to be won by air power.
